This slogan of the immigrant rights movement expresses a historical fact--that much of the United States was once part of Mexico and that it was the U.S. that waged war and seized half of it, which includes the territory of the present day states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. The war itself was justified on the basis of "Manifest Destiny," expressing the belief that by virtue of their superiority it was Anglo-Saxon Americans’ providential mission to expand their civilization and institutions across the breadth of North America.

Chicano or Chicana is a chosen identity of Mexican-Americans in the United States who want to express a unique political, cultural and ethnic consciousness, and community pride. Chicanos are indigenous (non-Anglo) Mexican-Americans who resist the idea of assimilation beyond the shared Spanish language and the Catholic faith, and reject the post Aztec borders that divide the nation of Aztlán.

The oldest street gang in Los Angeles was formed by Chicanos who were members of a sports team and whose lives revolved around the local church. They changed their name from La Purissima Crowd, named after their church, to White Fence, after the white picket fence that surrounded the church and served as a symbolic barrier between the white residents of the area and the Hispanic community in the neighborhood.
